Well, don’t worry because everybody gets anxious about taking on a bigger role. You are taking on more responsibility, will be looked at to deliver results, and will have others lean on you for support, so feeling nervous is a natural reaction to accepting a role as a leader. And as an introvert, there is even more reason to be tense, because a leadership role means there are going to be more fresh experiences and every day will bring new challenges to you. The first thing to remember is that this a great opportunity and being offered a leadership role is a huge compliment from your manager and the company you work for. So make sure to take the time to congratulate yourself for success. After that, take a few deep breaths and prepare for becoming a leader by following this list: Don’t Think Too Far Ahead Don’t think too far ahead or too broad. It’s easy to sit and think about a million things at once that are happening around you as a new leader, but it will do you no good. The big picture can be scary and intimidating but it’s more important to look at the now and set small goals for yourself. A leaders success is built off the small things they do that accumulate to a lot, so sit down and figure out an immediate plan of action with the things that you can control. Be Humble Being open with your peers and the employees that you will manage is something that will really break down walls between everybody. Especially as an introvert, if you can open up and lay everything on the line, then you will all be in a much better place moving forward. There’s nothing wrong with telling everyone that this is a new role for you and that you are learning as well. Sometimes, even leaders need help and there’s nothing wrong with that. By telling everyone that you are nervous about the new role and that you are going to be working hard to adapt and succeed, your peers will respect you for it. It can even be a great icebreaker between you and the others you are working with on a regular basis. Try and Open As Many Communication Lines Speaking of opening dialogue, it’s important to really connect and communicate with everyone right from the beginning. First impressions are important and how things are when you first take over as a leader will dictate the continued relationship between you and your peers. If you struggle with large groups, you might be more comfortable with 1-on-1 conversations over a cup of coffee or even just in your office, away from others. As an introvert, don’t worry â€" you will be able to ask the questions and let them run the conversation when you talk with these employees. By talking with your coworkers and employees, you will be able to set expectations, figure out how they feel right out of the gate, and figure out a great way to operate things moving forward. Define Goals So They Are Known When you talk with coworkers, you will be able to make sure that everyone knows the goals and what everyone is working toward. These goals can be set as a company or as a department but setting things up openly is an important part. It means that everyone is accountable and that people won’t constantly be coming to you to define goals and set expectations. Another great thing about setting these goals is that you can do it on your own and then share it with everyone. For an introvert, being able to set company and department goals on your own is a great part of the transition process to becoming a leader. Keep Working At Becoming A Better Leader One important thing for being a leader is understanding that it is a process. Just because you have been promoted, you are not expected to know everything and be the perfect leader. You are still in a position to grow and learn as you get comfortable. There are lots of great options like online courses, Leadership Assessment Tests, reading informative articles about becoming a great leader, talking to other leaders, and more. Leadership is a responsibility that allows you to adjust and adapt. You can make mistakes as a leader â€" and you will. So be ready for them and be sure to learn from them rather than run from them. People are resistant to change.  Absolutely not true.  We make change from the day we’re born to the day we die.  We don’t just change as we age we change our life style, education level, jobs, relationship status and friends.  The list goes on.  Certainly, in the work place change is a way of life and people do have to deal with those demands. If you can make a good logical argument, people will change.  Wrong.  If logic worked no one would smoke, do drugs or be in abusive relationships.  Unfortunately, the groups that try to curb those behaviors seem to think that works but logic is not what moves people to change anything. Emotion and purpose is what will move people to change. If people in a group think a change will work, the change will go well.  There is more to making a change than the democracy of a good idea. There are some things that should never change.  We might like to think that but nothing ever stays the same no matter how hard we try to keep it that way. If people are unhappy or angry about a change, it means it’s a bad change.  No, not true.  All people going through change experience an emotional reaction called Transition.  Part of that emotional reaction is a mix of emotions ranging from anxiety, anger to excitement.  It can be a confusing way to feel but it’s very natural.  It’s important to help educate and manage transition just like any process or system change. She graduated from New York University in 2010 with a Bachelors degree in Dramatic Literature. See what she had to say about her alma mater: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Rebecca: If you go to New York University (NYU), you are choosing a completely urban lifestyle smack dab in the middle of Greenwich Village in New York City.This is exactly what I was looking for in a school, so it was like heaven.All city buses are available, but I took the subway everywhere.Its so easy to get around and to feel extremely safe, which I know was a big relief for my parents.Instead of a sleepy nighttime college campus, you can walk around in the middle of the night and everyone seems to be awake right along with you. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Rebecca: I had incredible, intelligent, and diverse professors and teaching assistants (TAs).Everyone was available for meetings or for email questions.Even though NYU is a big university, it really feels manageable and personable as even the biggest lecture classes are broken down into smaller discussion groups. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Rebecca: I lived in a dorm briefly, but overall I chose to live off-campus. Many students do the same.The dorms are a great start a nice home base to meet friends initially and have easy access to dining but creating your own home in New York (or Williamsburg, Brooklyn for me) was one of the best parts of the experience there. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Rebecca: I studied Dramatic Literature, which is the English side of theatre and film.I had initially thought I wanted to be an actress, but I realized that I wanted to base my education on understanding what makes a play or film truly excellent (and then pursue acting and directing later on).Though I was not part of the Tisch program, I could take film and playwriting classes with other Tisch students, so I never felt left out of that experience.It was so great to have professors who were working in the field I was studying, who could tell us firsthand stories of what it was like to be a working playwright or screenwriter, for example. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Rebecca: I actually transferred to NYU, and the way I met other students quickly was through theatre.I acted in several plays and met really wonderful actors and directors.It opened me up to a whole new world outside of my regular classmates. I never met anyone who was in a sorority or fraternity!Its really not a big part of the lifestyle.The best thing to do at NYU is to get out and get involvedthere are so many interesting people who are seeking adventure just like you. VT: How are the various study areas such as libraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Rebecca: I loved Bobst a real city library.Just floor after floor of stacks where you could tuck away and work for hours.It definitely would get crowded come finals time, but there was always room for more.I have good memories working there.I also really loved hanging out in Washington Square Park, which is right across the street from the library.Its not part of NYU campus, but it sure felt like it was. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Rebecca: Well, you have no choiceyoure in the city!Its fantastic. Thousands of restaurantsand cheap options too, which is great for students.The farmers market in Union Square was one of my favorite parts.I would also spend hours sitting in different cafes all over the city. There were also a lot of pretty affordable theatre shows, which is absolutely essential if youre studying playwriting or acting. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Rebecca: I cant believe itI actually had to Wikipedia this.Apparently, the undergraduate student body is about 19,000.I can say it truly did not feel like that.While I had the occasional large lecture class, there were always smaller discussion groups that met later in the week.I would say almost all my other classes were less than 20 studentswith the writing classes no more than 15.This was ideal as I got a lot of extra help with my writing and also learned a lot from my classmates work. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one you regret the most. Rebecca: I feel like this epitomizes how amazing NYU isI love the playwright Annie Baker, and I havent been quite the same since I sawCircle Mirror Transformationat Playwrights Horizons.Well, she came to one of my classes and we got to interview her!She couldnt have been nicer.That was the best seeing someone in person who I so greatly admired whose work was being shown in the exact city where I was getting my education.Amazing.And she probably just hopped on the subway to get there like everyone else!I will remember that forever. Learning English with Holidays December 26 The 26th of December is more than just the day after Christmas Day. It is also an important holiday in itself.In England and many Commonwealth countries (Australia, New Zealand), it is called Boxing Day. This is because, traditionally, December 26 was the day people filled metal boxes with money for the poor outside churches. It was also the day employers put Christmas presents in boxes for their employees.In Ireland, December 26 is called St. Stephens Day, after Saint Stephen who is said to have been the first Christian martyr on this day.December 26 is also known as the Day of the Wren in some Celtic countries. The wren, a small, grey, songbird, was traditionally hunted and killed first and then brought from house to house by children in costume collecting money.
